Basic Data

  1. Political Relations

(1) Japan opened a legation in Iran in August 1929, and Iran opened a legation in Japan in July 1930. Diplomatic relations were suspended in April 1942 and reopened in November 1953. In February 1955 the legations were elevated to the status of embassies. In January 1977, the Japanese Consulate General opened in the city of Khorramshahr, but it was temporarily closed in 1981 because of the Iran-Iraq War (officially closed in April 1997).

(2) In May 1958, Shah Mohammad Reza PAHLAVI visited Japan. In November 1960, the Crown Prince and Princess visited Iran. In September 1978, Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda visited Iran.

(3) Iranian President Seyyed Mohammad KHATAMI visited Japan at the end of October 2000, the first visit of an Iranian president to Japan, and the first head of government from Iran to visit in 42 years.

(4) VIP visits continued after the Ahmadinejad administration was formed, including the visits by Mr. Mohammad Reza BAHONAR, First Vice Speaker of Parliament, to Japan in November 2005; Foreign Minister Manouchehr MOTTAKI in February-March 2006; Mr. Esfandyar Rahim MASHAEE, Vice President and Head of Iran Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicraft Organization in July of the same year; Mr. Mohammad ALIABADI, Vice President and Head of Physical Education Organization, in August 2007; the visits to Iran by Mr. Itsunori Onodera, Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs in October, November and December 2007 and June 2008; visits to Japan by H.E. Dr. Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf, Mayor of Tehran, in October 2008; Mr. Esfandyar Rahim MASHAEE, Vice President and Head of Iran Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicraft Organization, in November 2008; Mr. Hojjatol-eslam Mohammad Esmail SHOUSHTARI, Advisor to the Judiciary Chief, in November 2008; and Mr. Mojtaba SAMAREH HASHEMI, Senior Advisor to President (special presidential envoy) in January 2009. On June 3, 2008, Prime Minister Fukuda and President Ahmadinejad met on the occasion of the World Food Summit in Rome, the first meeting between the leaders of Japan and Iran in eight years. Meetings between the foreign ministers of the two countries have been held 13 times, including 10 telephone conferences, since 2006.

  1. Cultural Relations

(1) Japan-Iran Cultural Agreement concluded in 1957 (cultural exchanges commemorating the 50th anniversary of this agreement from November 2008 to November 2009).

(2) Most active human exchanges in Middle East (about 40% of government sponsored foreign students).

(3) Iran Culture Week organized by the Embassy of Iran in Tokyo, July 1997, May 2003

(4) Japan Culture Week and Month in Tehran organized by the Embassy of Iran in Tokyo in October 1998, October 1999. Project to introduce Japanese culture also held in February 2003.

 

(5) "The Glory of Persia" exhibit held in Tokyo, Aichi, Hokkaido, Fukuoka, and Osaka, August 2006-September 2007. The history of Persia dating back about 7,000 years was introduced through an exhibit of approximately 200 pieces, mostly from the National Museum of Iran.

(6) 2009 is the 80th anniversary of the opening of Japan-Iran diplomatic relations.
